Go Green and Save Some Green: Environmentally Friendly Sign Refurbishing

Did you know that there are many ways you can help the environment when considering an upgrade to your signage? Reducing our environmental footprint is important to us so we want to help our clients go a little greener, too.

Here’s how:

First, consider the extent of the project you’re embarking on. The signage may just need to be refurbished and not totally replaced. Many times, the brackets, hangers and encasements do not need to be replaced – you may just need to upgrade the sign itself. By refurbishing and not totally starting from scratch you not only save money, you also minimize landfill and disposal costs.

Second, you can gain LEED credits when choosing the materials used in your signage. LEED is a green building certification system that verifies that a building was designed and built using strategies that focus on sustainability. A LEED certification is awarded to a building that amasses a score of 40-49 credits. LEED silver and gold ratings are 50-59 and 60-79 respectively and are awarded from the US Green Building Council. Highlighting your LEED scores can bring in new tenants and earn your company extra revenue. In addition, many governmental facilities require LEED certification for occupation of a building.

Third, refurbishing your signage with the environment in mind can save you extra money by reducing energy costs. By switching from neon or standard lighting to LED, you can experience a significant drop in costs in operating your signage.

Fourth, finding green ways to update your signage can help improve your status with zoning boards. Many times, zoning boards prefer high density urethane to wood because it lasts longer and requires less annual maintenance. This saves you money in the long run and reduces waste.

If refurbishing your signage is on the horizon, we encourage you to consult with our KORT “Go Green” experts who can make sure your project is environmentally friendly, cost-effective and brand-fit. This means that we not only save you money, but help save the environment, too!
